There was a time when Thomas Edison was praised a lot for his inventions on DC electricity. Thomas Edison was clearly a genius scientist who apart from inventing a bulb also made use of DC electricity to a large variety of other items.
However, in the same era, a young scientist named ‘Nikola Tesla‘ came into picture. Quite young then Edison, Tesla was quite impressed with Edison’s works and idolized him. He was too desperate to meet Edison and to show him his work on how his creation was generating and Alternating Current.
A lack of money to travel from one country to another made sure that Tesla never reached Edison. But a professor of Tesla recommended him to Edison saying
“There are two geniuses I know of Sir Edison. One is you and other is this young fellow named Nikola Tesla”
Tesla borrowed money from the professor and reached Edison traveling in a ship. Edison was impressed with the work of Tesla and told him to build an AC generator and promised him 80% of royalty (which was just a sarcasm which Tesla couldn’t understand). Tesla built it within weeks and when time of payment came Edison mocked him and threw Tesla out.
Mortified and filled with anger Tesla continued his work on Alternating Current. Getting more than 20 patents (including Alternating Generator, Turbine, etc) Tesla’s approach on AC became famous.
Newspapers made Tesla a minor star of the time which Edison couldn’t stand. Media called the upcoming war of these scientists as
“The War of The Currents”
Thomas Edison started experiments in front of a big crowd, chaining an elephant with manacles and electrifying the poor animal with Alternating Current just to prove that how dangerous AC was.
(Elephant used for experiment by Edison)
However, in a marriage ceremony of some rich prince of the time, Tesla decorated the place with his lighting system based on alternating current which clearly blow the minds of the people of the time.
(An astonishing lighting created by Tesla for the ceremony)
He also passed alternating current through his body in front of a crowd to show how safe his current was.
Although Edison coveted success of Tesla and thought of him as an enemy, Tesla never considered Edison as his opponent.
