In a 2017 verdict, Indian Navy decided to recruit candidates aspiring to join the force through 10+2 B.Tech cadet entry scheme, based only on JEE Main Result. Previously, PCM percentage obtained in Class 12th was considered for the scheme which will not be valid anymore. The selected candidates will complete their BTech degree from Indian Naval Academy (INA), Kerala and will then be recruited by Indian Navy as officers. The move is to ensure that the newly joined officers have BTech degree, other than the traditional military values and leadership skills.
Also, JEE Main marks will be a better benchmark as different state boards follow uneven marking system for Class 12th, making the quality of candidates coming for the Service Selection Board (SSB) interview or training very uneven. The application window for JEE Main 2018 is closed and the exam is scheduled for April 8 in offline mode and April 15-16 in online mode.
To handle the sophisticated platforms and weapon systems, it is quintessential to have more qualified and distinguished cadets, with advanced technical expertise. As per a Senior Naval Officer, “Military machines are upgrading at a high speed in India, marking the need to hire personals in defense system with greater technical expertise and understanding. The purpose is to find “sea warriors” which are capable enough to handle the challenges posed by technological revolution”.
Application under 10+2 (BTech) Cadet Entry Scheme are invited from unmarried male candidates to join the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kerala for a four-year degree course. Total 120 students will be selected each year under this program.
Educational Qualification
To be eligible, interested candidates must have passed Senior Secondary Examination (10+2 Pattern) or its equivalent from any recognized board with at least 70% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) and 50% marks in English (either in Class 10th or 12th).
Also, the candidate must have been born on January 2nd, 1999 to July 1st, 2001.
Physical Standards
The candidate’s height must be 157cms with correlated weight as per his age. The minimum acceptable vision standard of the candidate for distant vision is 6/6,6/9 correctable to 6/6,6/6 with glasses and he should not be color/night blind. Also, permanent body tattoos are permitted only on the inner face of forearms (from inside of elbow to the wrist end on the reverse side of palm/back of hand. Certain concessions are permitted to the candidates belonging to the tribal communities or tribal areas as per decided by the government of India, mentioned on the naval recruitment website.
Note: There will be no relaxation in the physical standards.
SSB interview of the shortlisted candidates will be conducted at either of the interview center in Bangalore, Bhopal, Coimbatore or Vishakhapatnam. The candidates will be informed regarding the same on their E-Mail or through their phone, as provided on the application form.
The SSB interview is conducted in two rounds: Stage 1 will comprise of Intelligence Test, Picture Perception Test and Group Discussion. Candidates who clear Stage 1 will qualify for Stage 2 which comprises Psychological Testing, Group Testing and Interview which will be conducted in a course of four days. Successful candidates will then undergo a medical exam for an approximate duration of three days.
